Microsoft released the first public preview of its on-premises version of Exchange Server 2016 for Microsoft Exchange on July 22nd. This preview version can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center.
As previously reported, many of the new features in Exchange Server 2016 are already available as part of Exchange Online and Office 365. In a blog announcing this preview release, the company describes Exchange Server 2016 as "an evolution of the functionality realized in Exchange Server 2013."
In this post, dated 22nd, Microsoft noted that Exchange Server 2016 includes a "critical update" to Outlook Web App. With the release of Exchange Server 2016, the company will rename Outlook Web App to "Outlook on the Web." Outlook on the Web adds new features such as "Sweep" (batch processing), "Pin" (pinning), "Undo" (undo), and inline reply. Exchange Server 2016 will also allow Microsoft to leverage updates to its search architecture in both Exchange itself and the Outlook client.
Exchange Server 2016 also improves data loss prevention (DLP) capabilities and adds 30 new sensitive information types. In addition, "eDiscovery" (electronic information disclosure), automatic extended archiving, and hybrid functions of on-premises and cloud will be expanded.
Microsoft will also add new features between this preview release and the official release, including enhancements to the audit architecture and audit log search.
