[National Science Museum] Released materials and stories about historical scientists on the web "Ryoyoshi Yada Digital Archive"

Ryokichi Yada (born in 1851, died in 1899) is the first professor at the University of Tokyo and the first director of the Educational Museum, the predecessor of the National Science Museum (hereinafter, Expo), and Japan. He is a scientist who has not only contributed to modern botanics and higher education, but also has a close relationship with the Department. This time, about 300 points, including notes, manuscripts, and letters derived from Yatabe himself, have been digitized, and the images and data data have been released in the format of IIIF ( * 1), an international standard. In addition, based on this data, we also created an electronic exhibition that introduces Yadabe's life. * 1 IIIF is an abbreviation of International Image International Framework, and conducts international community activities such as enabling images on the Internet published by various document storage organizations in common methods. We are promoting standardization of access methods for images and standardization of materials structures that bundle images.

The National Science Museum has been collecting, storing, researching, and exhibited various scientific materials. One end of the results is "specimen/material integrated database" (http: // db.kahaku.Five.You can see it from jp/webmuseum/).However, many of them were just presenting data, and it was not easy for users to browse the materials side by side with other materials and to expand them freely. Also, even if images and information of individual materials are presented, it is very difficult to read historical scientists' life and various stories from there. The digital archive to be released this time is the IIIF dataset set (https: // IIIF, which is organized by Yadabe Yoshiyoshi material in the format specified by IIIF..kahaku.Five.JP/List/) and the electronic exhibition produced using it "Life of Ryoki Yatabe, a scientist for civilization openings" (https: // dex.kahaku.Five.It consists of jp/yatabe/).These two are provided with images and information of individual materials in a widely available format by users, while arranging materials picked up from them in a meaningful order, and browsing together with explanations of experts. It is provided. As a result, you can use a wide range of exhibits as an entrance to interpret the materials and the datasets for subsequent use.In the future, the National Science Museum will continue to consider the construction of new digital archives and the potential of research and exhibition methods using them.[Public website] Electronic exhibition "Life of Ryoki Yada, the scientist of civilization opening" https: // deX.kahaku.Five.JP/YATABE/Expo IIIF dataset https: // IIIF.kahaku.Five.JP/ List/ [Electronic exhibition/ dataset creation] Independent Administrative Corporation, Science and Technology Research, Science and Technology, Science and Technology Group Nobumichi Ariga
