Microsoft has released a new update for Outlook 2010. If this is applied, it should be possible to fix a serious security vulnerability without causing a crash.
Last week, Microsoft cautioned that Outlook 2010 could crash by applying the 64-bit version of the November Patch Tuesday security update KB4461529.
Although it could have crashed, Microsoft did not recommend users to remove this update because the update fixed four remote code execution vulnerabilities. The company recommended trying Outlook Web Access instead of Outlook 2010 until a new update was released.
As Woody Leonhard pointed out, Microsoft released "KB4461585" for Outlook 2010 last week. This update fixes an issue that could cause Outlook 2010 to crash on startup after installing the 64-bit version of KB4461529.
You can download this fixed update from Microsoft's Download Center instead of the Microsoft Update Catalog.
The update targets only the .msi edition of Office 2010, not including "Microsoft Office 365 Home," Microsoft said. "It doesn't apply to the Click-to-Run edition of Office 2010, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home." Microsoft has instructions on how to find out which edition you are using.
There are no additional updates to the updates KB4461522 and KB2863821 for Outlook 2010. Microsoft unsubscribed on November 15th because of issues with these updates that caused crashes in apps such as Access. Both are urging you to uninstall the update to resolve this issue.
